Reading Epictetus’ Discourses, while talking about cultivating happiness there is a line where someone laments that his brother’s wife was carried off in war. Without missing a beat, Epictetus replies “Was it not, then, a great gain to lose a frail and adulterous wife?” and then moves right on to the next subject. He basically says wives are sluts and you should let them go. I just found it really funny. A lot of wisdom in those ancients . . . . .

It would be funny if Epictetus said this:
