An Open Letter Concerning Harvey Weinstein

The following is some thoughts on the media coverage regarding Harvey Weinstein, and what if any implications there are about men because of his actions. I do not support what he did, if he did all that, and to the degree he used physical force to compel a woman to give him sex, he should be locked up. What I noticed was what a completely different conversation takes place when women are present, and when it is only men. My thought were put together in an email I sent to a female friend of mine that wrote me about how horrible it was for all these women he supposedly abused. To whit:

Look, the Harvey Weinstein situation is horrible, and he is horrible.

But we are not going to get anywhere in this war between the genders we got going in this country right now as long as we approach everything with the notion that men are bad and women are pure. Many women willingly and knowingly participated. I have not heard that mentioned once in any media. Sort of seems obvious…we are all castigating ourselves right now with guilt because “everyone knew”. Well, if everyone knew, then I feel compelled to ask…what are you doing in a hotel room… alone… at midnight…with Harvey….because he drunk called you and said he wanted to discuss a part for you.

Media won’t allow for any exploration of that part of the story. There are hundreds of nubile young women in Hollywood right now that would quite willingly watch ‘ol Harvey flag his staff for 10 minutes to get a role in one of his movies. These are women who spends thousands on boob jobs, work out 2-3 hours a day to have a hot body, shop for clothes that basically ask others to look, all hoping to get noticed and offered something. Their whole focus is to get their body noticed because it’s all they have to get their foot in the door. A ten minute romp with Harvey to secure their first break. Forgetaboutit.

If we can agree that some rich powerful men abuse that power by using it to get advantage over young women, lets us also admit that young women understand their bodies are desired by men and willingly use that desire to obtain things. Even in our little world, we can see the effect say that a man with a fat bank account of a MD title… has on some women. Medical doctors don’t hurt for dates. Ugly rich men often have beautiful wives. Let’s not be childish about how the world operates.

I think now part of what we see going on is that Harvey provides some women with an opportunity, yes, an opportunity…to forgive themselves. Women who willingly went along with his wishes in order to get something from Harvey…and now they feel guilty but can partly expunge their guilt…by being a victim. Women who knowingly participated and then found some success due to Harvey giving them a break, and are now perhaps famous and…regretful. Many in Hollywood know others actors and actresses who have done similar…for other roles…for other writers, producers, directors, or for jobs in some aspect of the movie production. LA runs on young flesh. The town is full of female hopefuls that work as an actress/model/dancer. It’s so common it’s a joke. But, a young woman who agreed to his requests…now they can remove this stain of guilt they feel about what they did once they can convince themselves that they were a victim and not just someone with low morals. So, playing the victim relieves their guilt.

Also, I believe some are worried, that their names will or may come out in a court trial and those women do not want to be seen as acting like a prostitute…that means she better get on the victim train. For the most part I think it’s simply regret. And right now in our society, we criminalizing female regret.

The part that gets left out of all this…is that women too come to the battle with weapons. Women, especially in hyper sexual environments like Hollywood, leverage men’s desire for them, for their physical attractiveness…to get things they want. These women are not pure, even though the media wishes us all to adopt that understanding. And they were for the most part, aware of the deal being struck. People talk, actors talk, and after the first few years, everyone knew what the deal was with Harvey.

And then there are young female Hollywood actresses who see a chance to get some publicity and need to claim that some did something to them. One women was all the headlines yesterday…because she said some producer spanked her. Hmm…Really. Like how did that come about? Because it’s pretty hard to get a woman across you lap for a spanking if she doesn’t want to be there. So, I read the story. No, no spanking, there wasn’t any spanking. Simply click bate. The real story. They had been flirting off and on throughout the production and one day he walked by her and gave her a tap on her bottom. One tap as he walked by. That’s not proper. Men shouldn’t touch women unless they know the women is ok with it. The press though, man they hear something about a young hot actress getting a spanking and they run that headline day and night.

(None of these comments are meant to include victimizing young children, under aged girls or boys. Having sex or sexually manipulating children should get you a nice long stay in an 8×10. Same with physical rape or assult)

There is an age old tradition called the scape goat. Basically the idea is we all heap our all of our sins upon one person and then we banish them from our community…and they take our sins with them. A version of that is what is happening with Harvey right now.

So, no locking Harvey up won’t solve a thing. He should pay for his crimes. But Harvey isn’t an example of men and that story can’t advance the discussion in any meaningful way.

And we won’t advance the discussion, we won’t even start to understand or reconcile the differences between men and women and how to respect each other and find where the boundaries should be. Because the cultural meme right now doesn’t allow for any discussion on the role for women in these exchanges.

In the media, women are always pure as the driven snow, and men the predatory criminals. So, now due to Harvey, society will be off for months on some tangent about evil males and we’ll have endless discussions about how to curb men and talk about male toxicity and how men are bad and how women are victims. Some maybe were, but it strikes us men that many willingly made the exchange. Everyone knew. They went because they were quite willing to watch him jerk off if they got the role. They knew. And it isn’t a sufficient answer to say, well I would have left but I really wanted the role, the money, the ring. That’s not a victim.

There is an old saying in law…extreme cases make bad law. Harvey is an extreme example. He isn’t a signal about how men treat women. No, what this whole sordid affair revels is that some men with money will use it to try and get with pretty girls. But it also shows that some pretty girls will willingly provide sex or something close to it, in exchange for something they want. Need proof of how common that is. There isn’t a town of any size anywhere in the US that doesn’t have young women willing to get up on stage and take off their clothes for tips. Voluntarily. And men with a willingness to pay. Who’s the victim and who’s the victimizer?

The media is also complicit in this. They get to run stories that are titillating about hot young Hollywood stars that were made to do naughty things. Put that in the spank bank. And run it under the banner of caring about victims.

So, my point is, Harvey is a creep and should be locked up for the times he forced himself on someone. The rest of the story is a little more nuanced then to just blame Harvey.

Right now he is serving as our scape goat. Our sacrificial lamb to expunge all of our sins. But the truth is…there is blame enough to go all around. And the real work toward having better relations between the genders starts when the roles of both men and of women in these types of exchanges are examined, and both men and women can be honest about our respective responsibilities and failings and guilt and not simply wrap it all up with a pretty bow saying men are bad. Real life is a little messier than that.

Good post. I agree with you that these problems will never be solved unless we can have an honest conversation about them. I am also sick of women making excuses for not coming forward with their abuse, for whatever lame reason they give. The women who didn’t report the abuse when this was happening in the 90’s are complicit in the abuse of the women who came later. Even if I agree its hard to come forward it is your duty as a human being to report these issues.

Sure, the guy’s a scum bag, but what about the women who never said anything until now, or even went along with it? What does that say about them. It takes two to tango. And some women did say NO.

My issue is how the media is painting him out to be some sort of monster who forced these women to do these things with him. Since we’re all mgtow it’s safe to say that we all know life isn’t fair. He’s going to sue, and he’s going to win.

Right now, the only thing they have against him is based off of crocodile tears. I love Ben Shapiro’s take on this. As I said in the beginning. Harvey is being attacked for some reason. This behavior is nothing new and there has no recent rape allegation.

His response was to go his own way. He told his wife…do what you want. Basically f~~~ you, I’m not begging you to stay.
