Today, I’m doing an ab workout for the first time in a real long time and something isn’t making sense. Is it normal to not be breathing when doing some ab workouts? I was doing crunches and sit ups and I was literally not breathing and my stomach hurts. When I’m done, I’m hyperventilating and trying to catch my breath.
So is it normal to not breath when doing these workouts?

Work out all you want…you will never see abs by simply exercising. Abs are 99% diet. You cannot see the details on the ground if there is a quarter inch of snow…or 3 feet! Gotta get rid of the snow! Want abs? Get rid of the belly fat…only way to do it. S~~~…even folks in POW camps had abs! They didn’t do much working out!

By the way, I don’t want visible abs. I just want the fat in my belly gone and my stomach flat and smooth. I can care less if my abs show. It’d be alright if it does.

The guys sre spot on about showing abs; they’re “made in the kitchen”. You can’t spot reduce – if you want to reduce fat around your middle, you need to lose weight throughout your entire body by burning more calories than you consume. As for your original question, you breath out during the crunch and breathe in while you are relaxing from it.

To strengthen your core bro. You can have abs and still have a weak core. Ever thrown out your back for no reason ?
A strong core gives you good posture as well.
Anyway if you just want to lose a little belly fat around your tummy you are essentially talking about losing weight. Back to the kitchen for you bro.

Ab exercises is good for core strength. Look at boxers and the abuse they sustain.
For breathing I breathe out during the difficult half of the movement and in during the easier part. Much like when you get punched in the stomach you won’t have the wind knocked out of you.
I’ve been playing around with suspension trainers lately for variety of exercises and a decent core workout.
Diet gets the flat stomach look, but exercise also burns off fat.

I have a full-set (6-pack) of well-defined abs (obliques and abdonimus). I agree with what already been written here in that your diet is best sole mechanism for having a trim waistline. However, achieving the stereotypical “cut abdominals” can vary amongst folks; some folks are really born with defined abs/and/or have to do very little exercise to achieve the “defined look”. Most people, including myself, have had to do A LOT of sit-ups, of various forms (in my case tens-of-thousands), to realize the “cut look”, in addition to eating properly AND maintaining a high-cardio routine; the high-cardio portion helps burn any excess intake that could potentially turn into fat. Also realize that the abs, like any other muscle, respond accordingly to the type of exercise; high-rep/low weight will define, while low-rep/high weight will add volume. The low-rep/high weight approach explains how to achieve the deep crevices between the abs.
Another good exercise is to fully-exhale, and then suck in your stomach as far as you can while holding your breath (visualize making your belly button touch your spine). Obviously, only do this exercise until you need to take another breath, but you should be able to maintain form for a good 5 8 seconds. Then take a breath or two, and do it again. I usually like to inhale/exhale deeply several times before each exercise so I prepare my system. This actually helps tighten the inside abdonimus and helps keep the belly from appearing to be distended/bloated when relaxed.
When doing repetitive exercise, you should inhale in through your nose on the retraction, and exhale through your mouth during extension.
I agree with MusclecareGolfer, especially with the stomach vacuums exercise he recommends. It’s important to breath when doing the other ab exercises otherwise you’ll make your blood pressure go through the roof and potentially give yourself a heart attack lol.
