Americans are having less sex — and helicopter parenting is partly to blame

Compared to the early 1990s, Americans in 2014 had sex nine fewer times per year, on average, new survey data show.

A surplus of time-strapped, over-anxious parents could be a major reason why.

In a report published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, data from more than 26,000 people showed longer work hours and the use of pornography didn’t correlate with the decline in sexual activity. Nor did factors like gender, race, income, or level of education. Instead, trends toward helicopter parenting and a growing body of unmarried people seem to be the deciding factors.

“We’re seeing more helicopter parenting, which is zapping energy that could go toward sex and other sensual activities,” sexuality counselor Eric Marlowe Garrison, who was not involved with the survey, told CNN.

The term “helicopter parent” was coined in 1990, by child development researchers Foster Cline and Jim Fay. It refers to a parent who prefers to monitor their child’s behavior in nearly all aspects of their life, from chores to playtime to schoolwork — typically, to allay the parent’s fears of harm or failure.

Burdened by these concerns, parents seem to have replaced personal time with parenting time, the new survey data suggests. Kids that were once free to roam their neighborhoods unsupervised now go on sanitized, structured playdates.

Data also seemed to support falling rates of sexual activity among younger, unmarried people. Millennials are the largest generation in the US, and research has found many people are delaying marriage. Unmarried people naturally tend to have less sex, report investigators from the latest study, so it would make sense for sexual activity to fall in parallel.

Some research indicates the growing prevalence of smartphones has made sex less appealing for younger generations accustomed to scrolling by their lonesome.

As part of a larger trend, the US is currently forming into what economists have called a “demographic time bomb.” It’s the vicious cycle of low fertility rates combined with decreasing spending. As families feel presure to save money, they avoid having kids, which produces smaller future generations.

In the most extreme cases, such as Japan’s, the population can actually start declining.

US families haven’t created quite that scenario in their own country, but the new survey data don’t offer much optimism to suggest families will reverse trends anytime soon. At least, not until parents decide to give kids a longer leash.

    Thoughts??

ummm… I would say parent’s monitor their children less today… way less.

Considering the drug resistant gonorrhea floating around and the low class, low character trollops lying about their status, less sex is a good thing!

I wonder can the public invest in the pharmaceutical company that produces the medicine prescribed for gonorrhea and HIV?

Atlanta is full of AIDS cases. If we can invest in the company that makes the medicine for it. we can make a LOT OF MONEY!!

Can’t tell you how many times I watched parent’s put a DVD into the player just to shut the kids up. It works too. Instead of enrolling the kids in sports or something that will give them a great life experience, they buy them a new DVD or video game.

I’m wary of almost every published study. They manipulate data to fit a preconceived conclusion. I can correlate almost any two phenomena and create a clickbait title. The point to notice here–blame. When females dominate society, there must always be somebody to blame. The hamster has to draw a conclusion that evades personal responsibility for the undesired outcome. Conditioned men use the hamster almost as much as women today.

“I’m not having sex, I feel bad, and I don’t want to look the truth squarely in the eye.”

Reads study that appeals to authority

“Oh it’s my parents fault again! Thanks Mom and Dad!”

Personally my lack of interest in sex stems from potential sex partners. Most the women my age have already been around the block and have had bouts with STDs, abortions, kids, and in general are just f~~~ed in the head from too much c~~~. Add that in to our bulls~~~ legal system and its just not appealing too me.

Its way too much risk socially, physically, legally, and financially just for a few minutes of pleasure.

Preferring porn or playing on my phone to the company of a woman is solely because women these days are toxic. If porn and smart phones weren’t so prevalent it would just be Playstation and anime or something. Its not that the distractions have gotten so huge women can’t compete, its that women have sunk so low they’re getting crushed by every tiny bit of competition out there. I’d rather just sit home alone with my dog eating a pizza watching Netflix than invite one over for the evening.

The part that was left out was this:

“The study also concluded that one major reason is that f~~~ing an average american woman is like sticking your dick in a downtown sewer. The other main reason being that the average american woman is now so fat that it would require a 15 inch dick just to be able to reach her vagina through the layers of blubber.”

The answer is NO. “I could but I won’t”. Memini murum!

Yes, for most married men it went from 10 times per year to 1 time per year, usually on Father’s day, also known as Slave day

Everyone knows that when the price of gasoline goes up, Americans drive less. When the price of air travel goes up, Americans fly less. When the price of food, or timber, or anything else goes up, people buy less of it. If it goes up high enough, people stop buying and start looking for substitutes.

Now, we have a declining birth rate, and a declining marriage rate, and declining rates of sex. And we have all these articles breathlessly panting about the “crisis” like it’s some big complex mystery that just dropped down from the the clear blue sky, and now we are all going to have to put on our detective hats and see if we can somehow figure out what the cause is…

    HERE’S A FEW HINTS COURTESY OF BRAIN-PILOT-THE-F~~~ING-SLEUTH:

Girlfriend sex: Constant financial expenditures and emotional maintenance combined with risks of STDs, domestic violence charges, pregnancy traps, paternity fraud, guarantees of an onslaught of an enormous attitude of entitlement and sacrifices of time, effort, and focus from all other interests… all of which escalate over time.

Wife sex: All of the above but with all of the usual escape routes eliminated to leave only one that involves financial expenditures amplified to at least 50% of total net worth, loss of your home, access to children, Constitutional rights to presumption of innocence, due process, possession of firearms, and freedom from unreasonable asset and property seizure.

Prostitute Sex: Pretty much the same cash price as it’s always been, as far as I know. Bring your own condom and the risks, (other than legal) are apparently acceptable.

Online porn: Essentially free with zero risks of any of the above.

Has anyone here happened to run across any articles about declining rates of prostitution or online porn?

    ‘Didn’t think so.

    Mystery solved.

Look, it's not my fault that tornado dropped a house on your sister. Now get back on your broom and get your ass out of here... and take your monkeys with you

It’s an “elephant in the room” type of scenario. You know the feminists aren’t going to acknowledge the obvious truth…
