I wonder how many of you that are against Alexa being in your house, carry a smartphone with you. Which not only can be hacked to be an open mic has way more access to your personal information and lives than Alexa will ever. There is no privacy violation most people voluntarily opt into than a smart phone.

For the record i have 5 alexa devices and a dozen alexa aware devices for surveillance and on/off type functions. I have zero privacy concerns with Alexa and I am pretty hyper aware of technology and the privacy violations it causes .

I’m aware my phone is passively spying on me and aggregating data. It’s inevitable. When I want privacy, I set my phone down and walk away (I do this a couple times a week for about an hour each).

There’s a ton of conveniences these devices give you and, as you’ve pointed out, they’re not (yet) backed by an AI. They just aggregate large amounts of data that can later be mined. I have pseudonimity because I’m not important.

It isn’t the active spying that you need to worry about. It’s the data retention. Your metadata is retained indefinitely. The real work is that there is a data warehouse and sophisticated learning software milling through huge repositories of user data. It may take six months, it may take six years, but they’ll find whatever they want.
