What a waste of time and money—carriers are just big fat sitting ducks waiting for that one missile to blow them in two. They are dinosaurs of seekrieg!
I can see some rich investors buying one to make it a cruise ship with its own airport.

They’ve been saying that since the invention of the missile!
The defensive weaponry has evolved also, now with the rail gun they can target to the horizon over 100 miles away! Mach 7 projectiles create a dome of protection that reach the edge of space!
A Nork nuke torpedo can take out a whole battle group. 10k dead. Two billion in hardware.

The Soviets started designing and the Russians have apparently finished developing a nuclear-armed, high speed, long range, submarine drone. Nuclear-armed as in megatons, speed as in ~50kn, and long range as in 6000nm.
NATO has designated it Kanyon and the only use for it anyone can think of is to destroy entire seaports.
Carriers have been great for threatening Second World wannabes and slapping around various Third World s~~~ holes, something which has been the primary role of the US armed forces since 1945. Carriers have, are, and will be of little use against the Russian Federation or PRC.

While the U.S. MIC has been pocketing tens of trillions of taxpayer money on projects that were never intended to work, Russia and China has leapfrogged ahead of the U.S. military in technological advancement.
The U.S. military might have some very advanced technology kept hidden, but that technology is clearly not mass-produced, nor going to be deployed on the battlefield, so that is a moot point.
The globalists still think they can send the U.S. military to do anything they want. On the other hand, in many cases the U.S. military is bluffing when is come to force projection.
Such some camel herders and drug mules are easy for the U.S. military. But, any military as strong as Iran is going to give the U.S. trouble. Russia, or China could probably have a real chance of defeating the U.S. in a conventional war.
President Trump is trying to get the U.S. military out of the global stage as much as possible before someone calls that bluff.
I read that the Chinese are working on a ballistic missile that shoots straight up and comes down on a carrier at mach 15. None of our known ship defense weapons shoot up or can hit a mach 15 missile as far as i have read.
I also read that someone (forget who, maybe the weapon Bill mentioned) was working on an undersea missile, driven by jets not props with a 12 mile range.
The weapon Bill mentioned, wow, megatons you only have to be close.
Think of the uproar in the US if we lost a whole carrier battle group in one shot. And of course nuke for nuke.
But I agree with Bill. A carrier has no effect on the Russians. They don’t care. Historically they go over land.
The Chinese have aspirations in the Pacific but staying close to the mainland and all the artificial islands they are building as bases, they are essentially “stone frigates”.
Just very interesting.

China is taking a page from World War II. One of the reasons the U.S. won the battle of Midway, was the Midway was an island the U.S. held, where the Japanese fleet was aircraft carriers.
It is hard to sink an island. And China has created a chain of islands that are interconnected to defend each other.
These islands are basically a stationary naval fleet for China.

World War 1 saw the introduction of the modern-day concept of the battleship. The HMS Dreadnought was unlike anything before it, and it changed the game. Nations rushed to catch up.
World War 2 saw the introduction of the aircraft carrier and their battle group escorts. The Japanese led the way with their spectacular early victories in the Pacific, all led by carrier air wings that rendered unprotected battleships obsolete. Nations (especially the U.S.) rushed to catch up.
Since that time, technology has improved with nuclear power, jet power, and missile power, but there haven’t been any major sea conflicts that have illustrated the obsolescence of the concept itself. Aircraft carriers and their battle escorts could get wrecked with sea-skimming missiles or short range ballistic missiles, nuclear or not. But since there haven’t been any wars in which this happened, the U.S. is content to ignore the threat and continue to bomb third-world countries that have no ability to resist.
In the event of a real war against a power like China, for instance…
Aircraft carriers would quickly be overwhelmed, and either sunk or forced to retreat. Submarines will rule the seas, and long range aircraft with cruise missiles will threaten any surface vessels. China and Russia do not have military doctrine based around offensive operations against small countries; they are based around long-range, multi-layer defense. China views Taiwan as a breakaway state that should be brought back into the fold, and China would structure their attack around defending against U.S. retaliation.
Modern Russia is not the Soviet Union. While the Soviets structured their plan around a powerful conventional thrust across Europe, Russia today is based around bolstering their traditional impregnability. Even their new fighter, the Su-57, is wrongly criticized for not being “stealth” enough but that misses the point. The Su-57 is designed to operate as a “sniper” in a multi-layer defensive scenario against an aggressor, backed up by ground radars, SAMs, and non-stealth fighters. It’s not designed to penetrate deep into enemy airspace like the U.S. F-22. The philosophy is different, so the design is different.
Back to carriers: They are locked in World War 2-era strategy, with limited uses for conventional war in the 21st century. Against other superpowers armed with the latest in missile technology, they are deathtraps waiting to happen.

While your point about islands is a good one and is the reason China is building up those atolls in the South China Sea, Midway is a very poor example of the concept.
No aircraft stationed on Midway caused any damage to any IJN ships. The aircraft stationed on Midway didn’t help find the Kido Butai and needed scouting reports from other assets to make their worthless attacks.
The only role Midway was that of bait. Japan correctly hoped that threatening Midway would bait the US into defending it. Then Japan was baited in turn by sending the first strike from the Kido Butai against Midway rather than waiting to locate and strike the US fleet. By sending their first “punch” against a target which could and did them no harm, Japan lost the battle.

Exactly. The West is still thinking in terms of limited war. They’re whistling past the graveyard thinking any war will constrained geographically and that only certain weapons will be used.
That wishful thinking should have died with the end of the Warsaw Pact and the revelation of the USSR’s plans to attack NATO. Where NATO had smugly assumed the entire NBC triad would be off the table and any NBC escalation would be a careful tit for tat exercise, the USSR had planned to fully use nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons from the first moment. Only the ICBMs would be held back and that was because the Soviets were betting – correctly IMHO – that no US president would trade Berlin, Rome, Paris, and London for NYC, Boston, Chicago, and LA.
So, while the West’s mindset was formed by fighting, and mostly losing, limited conventional wars with purposely limited weapons around the world, the Soviets were planning to use everything at their disposal if the balloon went up in Europe.
Similarly, when the PRC decides to take Taiwan and the US intercedes, all the satellites that every Western military, government, and economy depends on will be gone inside of 24 hours. They won’t be pulling their punches no matter how hard the neo-cons pray.
The PRC hasn’t bought and isn’t building carriers of it’s own to fight the US. The PRC is doing that for the same reasons the US has carriers; so it can slap around Third World s~~~ holes. In the PRC’s case, it needs to bully nations like the Philippine, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, and others.

Agreed. It’s painful just how ignorant the neo-con warhawks make themselves appear. They are vastly unprepared to plan, let alone lead, a fight against an enemy like China. They imagine that all conflicts will be like Afghanistan, and won’t even contemplate a strategy that assumes tremendous American losses.
Best option? No war at all. America won’t win. All our tech that we brag about is vulnerable and will be targeted.

Yeah, it’s really hilarious when I read American commentators saying stuff like, “Oh, the Chinese can’t even make an aircraft carrier!” The carrier is WW2 technology. It’s not super hard to create. It’s laughable that western military pundits assume that China is so backwards that they are incapable of making, let alone fielding, an aircraft carrier.
China correctly realizes that parity with the U.S. does not mandate identical tech, or identical strategy. America overestimates its military might because it judges everyone else by its own yardstick. China doesn’t need to have more aircraft carriers than the U.S. It just needs an effective way to deal with them. And China has several viable options for this.

By the way,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sunken_aircraft_carriers
Look at how many of these carriers were sunk by submarines. Even in WW2, the writing was on the wall. Subs cannot be tracked 100% of the time; that is their strength. There are many peacetime incidents where subs sneak up on American carriers and American officials try to save face by claiming there was no danger.
Yeah, right. For every case where it makes the news, there are ten more incidents where a Russian or Chinese sub got in close and then got away undetected.

Toe to Toe against the Russians or the Chinese the ONLY advantage the US has is its technical wonders and gizmos. Germany was way ahead of the allies in terms of technology and it didn’t save them; and it won’t save the US. Those guys will eat us for lunch—when the most senior NCO in the US Air Force is some grinning slag/woman, or other women are in areas of command responsibility not due to any ability but do to political correctness and that agenda then we’re in trouble fighting a real enemy. The PC agenda has rotted out our military from the inside out, and they try to cover their ineffectiveness by investing more and more little push button gadgets to do the fighting but in the end victory goes to the MAN who can take and hold territory and has the will to kill the enemy and our little cupcakes just ain’t got it where it counts.
OK before everyone jumps on me–yes the US had the nuclear bomb BUT Germany had:
Jet fighters, the V-2, Single charge disposable anti-tank weapons like the Panzerfaust, wire guided rockets, advanced radar and so on. They were crushed by sheer numbers and who has the numbers? The US, or Russia and China?
