I’m skeptical about it’s ability to spread as it kills so quickly. Somewhere between 24 hours and three days I’ve read. It’s too visible and Madagascar would be easily quarantined if the outbreak gets exponentially larger.

But it is a thing. I could see a terrorist trying to spread it deliberately.

Part of me thinks that the black death in europe prepared the way for the renaissance.

Pneumonic plague spread by air has more serious implications than bubonic plague spread by rat fleas.

Shouldn’t be too hard to treat with antibiotics. But…

What happens if someone who traveled to Africa comes back to the US, feels like crap, goes to the hospital, then that plague bacteria encounters one of the antibiotic-resistant strains, and the bacteria species do their cute little exchange of plasmids with each other and then airborne plague bacteria now has plasmids providing antibiotic-resistant characteristics?

I may have spoken out of turn. It appears the main limiter is currently the SPEED at which it kills (too fast).

Not following the conversational thread but this is very timely as I’ve been playing a lot of Plague Inc: Evolved recently where you can manipulate the progress of a pathogen with the goal of eradicating humanity.

There is a Black Death mode which happens to have airborne plague as one of the options. I’m going to see how many would hypothetically get infected starting in madagascar. Probably less than you would think. I’ll return with the results.

So I ran a simulation assuming that the bacteria would mutate, was pneumonic, was hard to cure, developed anti-biotic resistance, and escaped madagascar. Pretty much killed the entire planet except for Greenland and Iceland, because they’ll apparently close their ports in a hot second.

So assuming people are lazy and god hates us, sure, it’s possible.

Yep, but if it’s mutated it will kill off a lot of people in the general area first. It’s kind of a s~~~ty vector when you think about it. But again, if it mutates/becomes antibiotic resistant that’s when things get a whole lot worse. Then it’s untreatable, airborne, and highly infectious.
