Just saw it in the theatre. Its BOTH a quiet, cerebral, artsy film in certain respects. However! There is plenty of action that gets you on your seat so its not all philosophy and mystery… When I say on your seat, I mean it. They did some stuff that was really badass!

Men here will like it, they will like the main character. This is a MEN’s Film! I mean that in the sense that its prodding at the Male Mind, the male masse psyche. You probably need to see this guys.

The movie is making statements that exceed MOST peoples grasp. Its NOT just about ISSUES surrounding the Freudian Male core but its also making, in my opinion, a subtly sarcastic but somber statement about humanity and the cosmos.

Many will NOT “get it” … I repeat… especially women will hate it. But this film is up there with Interstellar. It actually would be better except for there is no TARS.

Hope this helps. Its 2 hours so dont drink a lot of water or your bladder will hurt towards the end. I always make that mistake lol

    Critics are insane: ‘potential spoilers’

“Ad Astra takes a visually thrilling journey through the vast reaches of space while charting an ambitious course for the heart of the bond between parent and child

See how they avoid the word Father and Son ??!!! Unreal, taken directly from Wikipedia Reception for Ad Astra page

    This one is even worse:

…saying that “Ad Astra is one of the most ruminative, withdrawn, and curiously optimistic space epics this side of Solaris. It’s also one of the best.”

Um, I agree the film is easily in the Top 5 best Space movies this century, Yes! But ‘optimistic’ ? People this obtuse shouldnt be paid as critics, nor given a platform like Wikipedia to guide others.

I know it was subtle, but this movie was a massive SLAM against humanity and the hope to find alien life. It was also a palpable slam against the childish distraction that women are. Too feint for most to realize (except old boxy feminist kaunts who were visibly pi55ed leaving the theatre). lol

Ad Astra doesnt find alien life. His sarcasm in closing, upon going back to Earth with his Psych Exam monologue, and renewed relationsh!t is obviously tongue in cheek, a Lamentation of the Meaninglessness of existence and being a Human Doing for a woman. He looked like he’d rather be doomed and falling into Neptunes pressured death wind. Optimistic? Buwhawhaha! Yeah right pal!

I’m very much looking forward to seeing it. Probably wait for the DVD though. Blade will be disappointed that there are no anal probing aliens in it…

Autolite, I believe you will like it because youre a deep thinker and its certainly geared towards Men and doesnt overstep rational plotlines. This isnt a movie that drops a big Sci FICTION element like Interstellar did with that convenient Wormhole that just happens to zip you away safely to another “Galaxy” as they claimed not to mention other ridiculous stuff in Interstellar.

Ad Astra is very much a Serious Film as far as the tech-parameters. It’s liberties are taken exclusively in the presentation of the Camera Shots. The director takes some liberties in how he carries you to the next scene. He understands that its FILM (images and audio) You dont always have to be 100% pragmatic and show how every little thing unfolds. The best example would be, like in the movie The Revenant where you get a lot of Surreal Interludes. (those were flashbacks though, Ad Astra uses them to carry the plot). He does this because its symbolic and that means it foreshadows larger symbolic takeaways.

For those that dont mind one minor spoiler. There is a Moon Combat Rover sequence that is fvcking Rad. Its like an Iraq Convoy ambush on the freaking Moon bro. This movie has MANY Flavors that harmoniously roll into a LOVE LETTER to the Male Psyche.

    Well
    Thank you for the review.
I will definitely watch it when it comes out on Blu-Ray (I hate theatres with other people and shyte.). Hopefully without a prejudiced eye.

There was a time in my life when I gave a fuck. Now you have to pay ME for it

Its WAY WAY better than Gravity. I like Gravity too

Your automatic skeptic reactionary brain functions will only light up two or maybe three times and I think you will be able to let it go quickly. The Suspension of Disbelief will stay intact enough for you to get into this film.

I already want to see it again LOL. But I aint paying more money… waiting for DVD release, Blue Ray… Then I will watch it on repeat for months. LOL

That’s only a problem when a movie pretends to be an actual factual account of a story. As long as it portrays itself as being fictional from the start, I’m very okay with that…

Sounds great. Big fan of Brad Pitt anyway, so it helps.

Thanks for posting the review, brother.

I really liked Collateral with Tom Cruise (you may like it too). There was some deep philosophical conversations in it and great artistic imagery as well. Kinda sounds like your description of Ad Astra.

I’ll definitely wait for the DVD.

Im convinced Ad Astra has a massive symbolic parallel that now has finally occured to me when I was trying to run a Half this morning. I gave up after 10 miles and just walked the rest, and that is when it came to me.

Id better not say, because its too ruinous for those who have never seen it. I knew the plot was a little funny, but now I see what the writer’s main message was. Its deliberately referring to something in a major way.

What a truly wonderful Artsy Space film. A true Gem that came out of no where.

Cant ask for much more this year. TOOLs new album and Ad Astra were life transforming for me.

Cant wait till Dune comes out next Thanksgiving

Here is the review I left on Ad Astras google listing. People are really tearing into this film with Hate. Its so funny, how stupid people are, they cant understand art or hidden meanings! LOL. And if theres no Transformers or Car Chase scenes with female heroes, they freak out and say the film is slow and boring. Most people have No Taste whatsoever for fine art.

This film is alot like Solaris (2002). If you hated that movie, or dont even know what that movie is… chances are youll hate this one too.

    Spoilers:

An unapologetic tribute to the human Male experience. Reminiscient of Soderberg’s Solaris, cut with more gore and a grand symbol that only hits you well after you leave the theatre.
The man at Neptune represents God, not the search for ETs. A lot of death in this film is morally justifiable just as we murder in the name of God. The meat eating horrible monkey is all we are. And McBride’s obvious discontent with ‘serving’ in his concluding Psych Evaluation.

His drive to conclude we’re alone. To give up the illusion of faith and Let his Father go… Some critics missed more than the dark sarcasm. They missed the grand allusion and point of the film. That humanity is letting go of God, or we will perish.
