About Ready To Upgrade My Surround Sound

I am just about ready to upgrade my surround sound and for a good price. For the past 12 or so years, I’ve had a Sony 90w X 6 surround sound (doesn’t support HDMI). I paid like $150-some for it at Circuit City as a display item and it was very good. The only downsides about it are that I accidentally broke the pin in the optical port, so I can’t connect the audio of my PS3 to it (I’m using old composite and coaxial to the Blu-Ray). And the other issue I have now with it, which I couldn’t then was that it doesn’t support HDMI; there was no such thing then.

The one I chose will accommodate for all that I use; Blu-Ray, PS3, and Comcast cable box (composite). I would like to hook up the audio from my old XP PC because that’s where all my NES, Genesis, and SNES games are on, and the XP is now hooked up to the TV. It’s a Sony 1015 watt, 7.2 channel 4K 3D video going for $350 plus free shipping from Best Buy. I also decided to go with 3 Monster HDMI cables (9′) go with it, replacing the 2 $4 cheap cables I have now. At Best Buy, the Monster cables I want are going for over $120 each (I need 3), but on eBay, I can get all 3 for $45. So I’m going to buy the receiver at Best Buy, and the 3 Monster HDMI cables from eBay. The only part that sucks about this is that I won’t be able to hook up the .2 part of the surround sound, because this is going in my bedroom, and where the speakers would of gone, my ceiling fan is in the way. Hopefully, this will be a smart purchase. I won’t be able to get it for a few more weeks, because May is car insurance month, and I like to pay for all 6 months at once, which is $295 and my budget is VERY tight, considering I’m buying 2 512GB Corsair flash drives to put all my movies and TV series on so I can play them on my Blu-Ray player without the use of a disc or Netflix.

One way or another, I can’t wait until I do get it, because just like with computers, I enjoy hooking up home theater equipment. Seriously Best Buy has no idea what they’re missing by disqualifying me at job interviews based on those stupid questions they ask me. I can sell their products, install them, and repair their customer’s computers, and I’ve been doing all of it for the past 14 years as a hobby and as a way of saving money.

Unclear if you were looking for reply to this or if you just posted “FYI” but I used to be a real “audiophile” magazine reader and VERY big into multi-channel audio. Back when there were laserdiscs, I was all over that s~~~ and had quite a collection – which is laughable now.

I wouldn’t make SONY receiver a first choice (never really liked their AUDIO products)…. and prefer Pioneer at the same level. Unless you have a budget for something in the thousand$. This is something you will live with and enjoy for years, so in some cases , spending a little more can be WELL worth it. But if you just want to get the set up to start then make sure AT LEAST the speakers are good quality. (you didn’t mention the speakers front , center, and rear). And what about a subwoofer? That’s a must.

The 3 HDMI cables for $45 is a solid for sure.

I am on a budget. I agree that Pioneer is a good brand name, but it usually coasts a lot and I don’t have a lot of money to work with. I’m not going to buy something over $1,000 to have sound, when $350 is better than what I’ve had the past 12 or so years. This next one has 1015w, 7.2 channel and supports everything I have. Besides, by charging for that Sony receiver on my Sony charge card from Best Buy, I get 3X the rewards, which I use towards the PS Network for more games and add-ons.

I did buy the 3 HDMI cables and for $44.97. Best Buy was going to charge $50 for each, and I got all 3 for less than that on eBay. The only difference was is the one on eBay was new but out of the package. I figure, save myself the money and get the 3 off eBay for $45 because spending an extra $100 for plastic wrapping isn’t worth it to me. They’re 9′ long, so that’s a win.

Well I’m looking at the Pioneer 1155W 7.2 channel 4K Ultra HD 3D pass receiver here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/pioneer-1155w-7-2-ch-4k-ultra-hd-and-3d-pass-through-a-v-home-theater-receiver-black/3533253.p?id=1219588123868&skuId=3533253 and it’s only about $10 more than the Sony I wanted. It looks like it’s compatible with all my electronic equipment. I’ll look into that, now that it looks better. The downside is no 3Xs Sony rewards, but what was I going to use those points for anyway; PSN money for PS games, which would be cheaper to buy straight out rather than collecting the rewards.

Would anyone suggest or recommend the open box version, which is only $288 instead of new at $359? If it doesn’t come with a remote, I wonder if my universal remote is compatible with this one to do all I want it to do.
