I carry a .32 Beretta because it is small and easy to draw. In addition most confrontations happen at close range and it is easy to wield. However, I recently feel out gunned. I have carried this pistol for over 20 years and I am very comfortable with it and THANKFUL I have never had to use it. That said, I think it may be time for an upgrade? Thoughts?

For pistols the two main choices for semi-automatics are .45 ACP and 9mm.

Newer .45 semi-automatic pistols are using a similar staggered ammo magazine as the 9mm magazines. But, the trade off is the .45 is heavier and bigger than the 9mm.

The 9mm pistol is fine, but it does not have the punching power of a .45. On top of bullet damage, a .45 will knock a full grown man down. A 9mm will just do bullet damage.

When is comes to the 9mm and .45, recoil is more to do with the pistol than the ammo. The lighter the semi-automatic pistol the greater the recoil.

Find a pistol you are comfortable with.

Also, there is the issue of the solid trigger versus the strikerfire triggers (Glock pistols mainly use strikerfire).

I prefer solid trigger to allow better trigger-finger adjustment for more accurate shooting.

If you go with a .45 semi-automatic, look into the 1911 based pistol models.

Get an S&W 44 mag. and never be outgunned! It’ll knock a mack truck out! But you can’t do rapid fire you’ll be shooting airplanes or laying flat on your back!

My carry piece is a Walther P380. Slightly smaller than a 9mm, easy to conceal.

I’m not worried about “knocking a man over”. I think most people, when receiving a well placed bullet, will stop and think about their next step for a moment.

My standard sidearm, however is a 1911 .45, just because I’m a better shot with it… but I bet I can get three shots on target with my .380 before any poorly trained assailant can even get his Glock back on target after the first wild shot.

We have a common agreement in this topic.

The gun you are comfortable with is the best. The.22 in your pocket beats the .45 you left at home.

Thanks for the good input gentlemen.

I think the CZ 75-PO1 is one of the best concealed carry weapons out there. It is not too big and is chambered for 9mm. It is significantly smaller than a Beretta model 92, yet only carries one less round with a 14 round magazine. The slide is not very tall, reducing potential recoil due to less leverage. It is not super light like a Glock either, this also helps to reduce recoil. It had to pass some of the craziest tests ever to become one of the few NATO spec weapons, it even has a NATO serial number on the side of it. Carried by the Czech police and made in Czechoslovakia, this thing is about as proven as it gets. Talk about quick follow up shots in a decent sized round, nothing beats it for it’s size. I bought one awhile back, and aside from accidentally shooting myself in the foot with it one day I don’t see ever regretting it.

Gun Review: CZ 75 P-01. Take Two.

Nothing wrong with 32 ACP and CZ makes a number of guns that fired that round. “outgunned” is irrelevant if someone misses as compared to a shot between the eyes. Who cares what you missed with, and a .22 can kill as easily as any round if it is on target.

For many years the Mossad had assassins armed with the Beretta 70S in .22 As for me I’m a wheel gun guy at heart. In the winter I usually carry a SMith & Wesson 64, 4 inch barrel. Of course the .38 +p rounds are of my own manufacture, Or a Smith and Wesson 625 again with rounds I made. In the summer I carry an Astra A-75—9mm, or a S&W Airweight bodyguard.

In terms of ballistics the best wheelgun round is .357, the best auto round is 10mm.
