Lots of post have been made on entertaining hobbies such as video games, intellectually stimulating hobbies such as programming, and physical culture. What I have not seen are many post on learning an instrument or any other hobby involving art. I think this is mistake. A man needs an outlet for his emotions and playing an instrument is a great way to channel a broad range of emotions. As a depressed high schooler, the thing that got me through it was songwriting and playing guitar. I had to channel the sadness through music. I still use it and imagine it would for a lot of you too. If you’re feeling depressed, considered picking up an instrument and expressing that emotion through music. We may be logical enough to see through women’s s~~~ and go our own way, but we aren’t robots. I know I probably sound repetitive, but seriously, consider learning an instrument. For me classical guitar is the best; I highly recommend it.

While writing the post I thought of this song and though I might as well throw it in here:

I always wanted to learn either banjo or bag pipe. Those are manly instruments and seeing what wonderous things talented people have done with them I have been inspired. But oh so little time, perhaps once my MSc is done, many many years from now….

I’m actually an undergrad music student. Let’s just say every now and then I choose to play Skyrim or another game rather than practice.

Just imagine doing a piece of classic rock like this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cZS12RiBQ3o
It would be worth many hours of practice.

I’m a retired doctor and I love to play. To me music is a hobby that can be enjoyed until the later years in life. I’m 55 and have been playing flute and sax 2 hours every day for the last 40 years.

I’ve currently started a blues band which is a lot of fun because it gives me an opportunity to jam a lot.

Playing music is a great way to relax and meet new people.

Been awhile since I’ve picked up my guitar, maybe I’ll do it tonight…..

Learning an instrument rewires your brain and in a good way too. Here’s an article you might like: https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-theater-the-brain/201312/the-brain-musician

Full disclosure: When I was age 12, I was offered piano lessons or German lessons. I chose piano. I got German.

Edit: Learning chess rewires your brain too, although the history of chess is sprinkled with many cases of obsession and quite a few of outright insanity. Musicianship might be the smarter choice.

I’ve sung a German drinking song with a men’s chorus before. Fun stuff. It went something like “auf eider zei, nun froh unt Zorgen frei…” Unfortunately I don’t know German so the exact lyrics are a mystery to me.

Do you play any atonal music for flute. It seems a lot of flautist love that stuff, like Brian Ferneyhough? Im learning polifemo de oro by brindal Reginald smith. Its an interesting piece.

Playing and singing closes the world and your worries out of your mind, especially when you hit the notes in exact harmony and the reverb is felt in your head, it’s the only time other than extreme skiing that closes the world completely out of my mind. (P.S. chess too)
    My opinion; psychological health food!
