Chennai Six: Britons released from Indian jail
There but for the grace of God go I.
India was a pain in the ass doing anti-piracy transits. One time we had a ship in dock in Bombay and the Indian officials came on to inspect the ship. We had gats and ammunition locked up with paperwork in the ship’s dry stores. I was on the bridge to receive them. I was told in no uncertain terms that if any of our security team appeared on deck, or tried to disembark we’d all be arrested! We had to spend three days below deck.
Sri Lanka was cool and we kept weapons there with their navy. All the Islamic countries in the Gulf of Aden etc were cool too. Egypt and Pakistan wanted baksheesh, but that’s normal for those places. The Suez Canal was nicknamed the Marlboro Canal, as the Egyptians would expect cigarettes and booze from dry stores to speed your trip through to the Med or Red Sea.
These guys were scapegoats. The ship’s Captain takes full responsibility for all paperwork, including the team weapons. I never liked that as crews could be from anywhere and some captains were not as professional as others. This Ukrainian f~~~ed it up. Glad they’re released, can’t have been good in that stinking hole of a prison.
I saw this on a news website.
It is good news. Nice to have some once in a while Cu.
The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority, but to escape, finding oneself in the ranks of the insane. Marcus Aurelius
Bro’ you remember that Customs landwhale? We came to Mumbai entering new trade. We came from West Africa. Bonded stores dry. She goes to check the stores as she didn’t believe 5 rims cigarettes and 3 bottles of booze would be all we had left. She tried to frame a smuggling fine for disinfectant in hospital, claiming isopropylalcohol had not been declared as alcohol on board. Indian customs are just as bad as West Africa. At the end she got a few hundred Dollars and we were free to sail.
Most probably that Ukrainian colleague was afraid or unable to pay a demanded “fee” from vessel’ s safe. Nowadays shipping companies have become “very concerned” about leaving cash on board. Especially West of 78 degrees East.
"Him, who delights in solitude, is either a wild beast or a GOD!" - Aristotle (Aristot. Pol. 1.1253a) 1 Hom. Il. 9.63; the passage goes on: ἐστὶν ἐκεῖνος ι ὃς πολέμου ἔραται.
I used to work with one of them… TOTAL F~~~ING BULLY!
Perhaps a few years in an Indian jail has humbled him.

Never had the pleasure of meeting her, just ordered below on pain of being arrested, quick as a flash. Goa was fine, even got a couple days ashore for a beer.

More than likely. I’ve worked with a few mouthy guys, you have to keep your head with customs. They don’t give a f~~~ about you and have 100% power over you. Maybe the attitudes of these guys might have exacerbated their predicament. Stay frosty, or you might be doing years in a black hole.
