Anonymous11I would never allow any of my clients near this dog of a company. However, on occasion, I am forced to help them through technical issues caused by 1and1’s negligence and/or incompetence with the companies in their business networking circles who use them for services.
I hate these incidents, because 1and1 is literally stealing billable time from me. I cannot fully bill my clients in good conscience for my work as they do not understand the technical issues or 1and1’s overall poor reputation.
1) Misconfigured email server reverse DNS lookup entries. I mean come on. How hard is it to make a f~~~ing A record properly?
2) I think their spam control system involves simple blacklisting all internet IPs then whitelisting them as needed. It looks that way to me.
3) The worst tech support I’ve ever encountered, ever. The lamest most surly untrained script monkeys you’ll ever encounter. I feel sorry for anyone who works there. It’s truly a dysfunctional company. They f~~~ed me over so hard this week that I’m not able to keep my other projects flowing properly. They are making me and my victim client both look bad to others.
I ran them through DuckDuckGo. I found hundreds of links running from 10 years ago through the present with people all having negative experiences with them mirroring all of my experiences with them to a tee. Yet, there are dolts who defend them.
How in the hell does a company like this remain in business for this long?
I understand they are cheap. First, you get exactly what you pay for in this world. A Belkin switch is not in the same league as a Cisco switch.
As for the pricks who own and manage this shell scam and the skinflints who choose them, you are nothing but thieves who steal from others to pad your profits. You have a slimy business model, but I know you already know that.
Sadly you can lead an exec to a decision, but you can’t make him think. They have been indoctrinated into the mentality of “The Bottom Line” so thoroughly that they aren’t able to see the difference between a quality, reputable service, and a fly by night operation. They see the savings but not the inevitable cost incurred when dealing with a company that is doing ~everything~ on the cheap. 1and1 is a sad example of this, but they aren’t alone, or even the worst of the bunch.

C-Pig,
You answered your own question as they are a cheap alternative for those companies that have no experience, but have a need for their services.
As more and more companies put more and more services online, companies have no experienced ITS staff to make the decisions of which company to hire and which to avoid. While this seems like an easy decision, you don’t know what you need to know with in the ITS Internet culture until you need it.
Hang in there.

So true and more and more of their ilk are becoming startup’s each month.

Anonymous11Every time I deal with their garbage, I feel like the life force is getting sucked from me. Hopefully, I’ll never meet worse, but I’m sure you’re right.
My problem is that skinflint exec’s bottom line is taking from mine and others. On a prior 1and1 incident, the IT guy I was working with located in another city was in the process of migrating his clients off of them due to poor service. He was not a happy camper, and I got the full scoop on the bastards.
I knew at first sight that this was a 1and1 issue just from the error codes even before I did any actual whois queries.
There are a lot of reports of them ripping people off too. Total sleazebags are what they are. This task would have taken no more than fifteen minutes to resolve on any of the systems I’ve deployed.
Thanks guys, they are a toxic company. They are not even in the same universe as Dell Pro Support, AdTran, or Rackspace when it comes to tech support quality.
@gregb0: One would think that Sally from HR, the defacto IT SJW with a degree in gender studies would, at least type 1and1 in Google.
I know people like that. They buy the cheapest thing compulsively without consideration of value. Also, the migration of services into the cloud requires IT experience and knowledge to properly implement. Revenues generated from troubleshooting cloud issues grow by the year for me. This one is so bad that I can only charge them for the actual value on a properly implemented system plus a couple of hours to cover dealing with 1and1’s bulls~~~.

Anonymous42A Belkin switch is not in the same league as a Cisco switch.
I learned to stay away from Belkin routers 20 years ago!
Cisco was one of my stocks that tanked during the freefall.
Whatever!
Hey C-Pig, they must be located in one of those feminist saturated utopias in India where the militant c~~~s run around f~~~ing up the techies with demands that are impossible in this world and the next!
I don’t care what you say! I want deep fried ice today!
Hey C-Pig, why don’t you build a layout for your customers that use these sleazebags can read and understand in laymen terms with arrows, diagrams, and everything, pin the tail on the donkey so to say.
When I started most the servers were U.S. based and much easier to deal with, also it wasn’t so c~~~ infested and much easier to navigate. I mean everything from soup to nuts was much easier to do, now you have to watch a video on how to get your registration out of one companies hand’s and into another for hosting transfers and all that s~~~! And each company builds a maze to discourage you from taking your business elsewhere and frustrating you in the process!
For now on I’m just gonna create a new web address rather than go through the agony of transfusing the ones I have registered!
It’s like these motherf~~~ers hold your s~~~ hostage and wave it in front of your face!
I don’t know you do it! I really don’t! F~~~ THAT! Once is enough!

It wouldn’t work in most cases. I do a lot of arcane troubleshooting of unique issues that most people just can’t determine for whatever reason prejudice mostly. I think way differently from most technical people and have an unconventional, intuitive out of the box approach to troubleshooting. I have a reputation of finding the really tough problems and implementing very reliable solutions. It also takes people skills to get disinterested third parties to do things for you and your client. There’s always one rebel inside the beast who’s willing to bend the rules of these mega-corps to help you. I usually find him. I find that being nice up front to people works better than screaming at them which is usually what they get all day so they actually want to help you.
1and1 is an exception. These f~~~s are a bunch of sociopaths IMHO.
I once had this sales c~~~ try to throw me under the bus over a tough networking issue, well, only for them to determine. I ran circles around her young fresh out of school slaves and ended up notching up my reputation with the client while hers fell. I just simply handed the her the rope that she used to hang herself and waited. I told them what the problem was at the first meeting with her contesting me at every point due to her agenda. I remember telling her that the data said I was right which p~~~ed her to hell and back. I ended up advising the client to let another company implement the end solution instead of hers which was not too difficult after her performance. She should learn to not be late to meetings and be so domineering. One of her young super techs was questioning why I insisted upon labeling everything thinking I was wasting time, a whole 15 minutes. I told him to come in at 2AM during an emergency and learn exactly why. That 15 minutes wasted has probably saved about three to four hours of direct labor over the past few years plus makes things way easier on a daily basis saving the client money over time.
1and1’s problem is that skinflints run the company while spending as little as possible maintaining a shell virtual business which they market to cheapskates. I can only view the external effects of their operation, and chaos is the result.
That’s all well and good, but when you impede upon others’ freedoms it becomes an issue.
My Cisco equipment is rock solid, but Cisco itself is an extortion racket. I usually roll out Netgear for lower end stuff. Adtran is my favorite enterprise grade Cisco competitor.
Adtran makes some incredibly solid equipment, however attempting to convince a purchasing agent that Cisco isn’t the second coming is like pulling teeth.
I agree, it’s an extortion racket, and what is worse is that you get the young guys, just certified, who simply can’t work on anything else.
