I’m sure many of you read this book or saw the movie. If not I highly recommend it.

A story about a courageous young man who would not be saddled by society.

Christopher McCandless. I’m sure this story has been discussed b4. Netflix just recently added this movie to its library. True MGTOW s~~~!

A book I have read a few times, and a movie I have seen a few times. They both sit on a shelf next to me. The kid was as MGTOW as it gets. He was tired of society at a very early age. He broke free and had some adventures as a vagabond. Sadly, he got himself in a bit of a pickle in Alaska and never made it back.

True about his death in Alaska but he still lived the most free MGTOW life imaginable. What I would give for it

McCandless was a f~~~ing idiot, Krakauer’s book is more fiction than fact, and Penn’s twisted the story even further.

The only thing McCandless’ life has to teach us is that stupidity can still carry the death penalty.

If you are physically healthy you can do it… After he graduated from college he gave away what was left in his bank account to OXFAM, 24k and then walked. He had been left 40 some odd K for college from a family friend or something… Mr. Supertramp was awesome. I would have really liked to have met him.

Not only have I read his book a few times, I am a big fan of Henry David Thoreau as well. Walden being one of my favorite books of all time. Mr. Supertramp was a big fan of Thoreau as well.

Don’t mind Oldbill, he is just a grumpy old man who makes money from war. I would give what he has to say about anything aside from women very little weight in light of what he does for money.

I’ve seen the movie but I haven’t read the book. I would like to do something similar but in today’s world I’m not sure thats possible. As soon as you’re no longer a productive member of society you’re seen as a potential “criminal”.

Note how Oldbill will never apply the same logic to those who join the military…

I am a big fan of Henry David Thoreau as well. Walden being one of my favorite books of all time.

Thoreau’s “cabin in the woods” was actually a preexisting hut in Ralph Waldo Emerson’s backyard about a mile and half from Emerson’s house.

Thoreau walked most days the couple of miles between his “cabin in the woods” to the town of Concord where he spent his times in taverns.

Thoreau’s mother brought him hampers of food most Sundays while he was living the simple life.

Thoreau sent his clothes out to be washed while he was living the simple life.

Thoreau decision to retreat to his “cabin in the woods” was due in part to his refusal to pay state poll taxes. When his aunt paid the taxes for him, Thoreau left the cabin soon after moving into Emerson’s house, and living with Emerson’s wife while Emerson was in Europe.

Thoreau lived a “simple life” of “self sufficiency” in a cabin built by someone else, on land owned by someone else, eating food bought by someone else, wearing clothes cleaned by someone else, with his taxes paid by someone else, and all just a few miles from town.

    What a man.

There are men who accomplish and achieve things. Then there are men who simply write about accomplishing and achieving things. When you begin to be able to tell the two apart, your real education begins.

Thoreau wrote a book that captured the spirit of a man who wanted to go his own way. Separate from society, and the state. It has been read by millions, and continues to reach new audiences one hundred and sixty two years after it’s release. Not much of an accomplishment huh? You also point out some admissions he makes in the book as if they were hidden.

The original s~~~ you took in this thread was on another man who admired the spirit that Thoreau captured in Walden. Maybe you would like to elaborate further on his life and death as well, along with his writings that have inspired many, including the fellow MGTOW who started this thread.

I watched part of that movie. It was a good film, but I don’t think I’d want a life like that. At the most, I’d get a homestead and build it in the woods.

I’m too used to the convenience of the city for a life like that. Call me lazy, but I’d rather spend my time studying and working than to have to worry about how I’ll catch my next fish.

    However, to each his own.

I think the whole point of equating mgtow as checking oneself out of society is wrong and misleading.

The dude IMO was stupid for isolating himself. More so since he didn’t have the tact or knowledge to survive out in the wilderness. Might sound cool as a retreat plan but to just up and go and then die from poisonous ivy induced diarrhea isn’t so fancy.

MGTOW isn’t checking oneself out of society. It’s to be a radar – to catch the manipulation and disposability society influences men with. And avoid being a statistic.

A man’s life lived on his own terms while enjoying the inventions, hard work, and conveniences of modern life (provided for by other men by the way) is still the best one out there.

Don’t chase or fall in love with a woman. And have a goal in life. That is in to the wild.
