I know I’ll get crap for this, but I was looking back at my 8 year marriage and came to a realization. I pretty much did my own thing after work and on the weekends. I never cheated on my wife, but I loved to go 4 wheeling and do outdoors stuff with my buds. She would hang out and go shopping with her friends.
I got married right out of college because “that’s what you’re supposed to do!”
I would begrudgingly go to the in laws house for holidays, but other than that, I pretty much just did what I wanted.
When my wife divorced me, I didn’t realize it at the time, but my life was about to get even better. Now I wouldn’t have to spend my holidays with the in laws anymore! And I can ramp up what I want to do even more now.

not an ideal marriage in the traditional sense.
mine was similar,
so i’m not trying to denegrate your experience.

Just because you had your time off for good behavior didn’t make you a Man Going His Own Way because by being married you couldn’t possibly make YOUR OWN CHOICES.

I’m staying in a “legal” marriage until my youngest graduates high school. Even though I have my own life, and have very little to do with the resident ole lady, and make many of my own choices about a lot of things. I’m still NOT a Man Going His Own Way.

I feel an affinity, I wasn’t exactly like that during my marriage, but pretty similar: I did what I wanted about 50% of the time, and during the other 50% I craved to do what I wanted. I did enjoyed staying with the kids, though.

I would call such situation and phase “Wanna-Bee MGTOW”.

Why do you think you would get crap?
It’s very likely that many (perhaps even most) divorced MGTOW were, during their marriage contract, more or less similar to you and me.

I tell women I’m married now. I talk about my wife like she’s alive and well, even though she’s been gone two years. Sometimes I even wear my ring. My job is such I meet a lot of women that are widowed and divorced. They act entirely different when they find out I’m single. I’ve had them calling every other day wanting to meet for lunch or coffee and go over this and that. So I just tell them I’m married, and they leave me alone. I’m too close to retirement I can’t risk a complaint from a women p~~~ed off that I spurned her.
