I’ve been there. Even if all you want is friendship (my case), they still like to play these games. They think highly of themselves, and not so much about men. I once became acquainted with a foreign grad student (different than the one I courted while I was working on my Ph. D., but from the same country). Three times I tried to set up a coffee date with her.

The first time, there was a last-minute matter (i. e., “something came up”), but I accepted that. Things like that happen once in a while.

The second time, some boy band she was a fan of was in town and she absolutely had to go to their show. (Uh-huh, and she didn’t remember that when we agreed to meet?) Of course, she told me after the fact.

The third time, we agreed on a day, a time, and a place. A few days ahead, I wanted to check if she was still willing to meet. One day passed, then another, and so on. After the appointed time came and went, I sent her an e-mail message and reprimanded her. Guess who was the indignant one?

That was the last time I ever made any effort to have a date with a woman.

Back in the day that was something I remember distinctly and oh how I hated it, they heavily used “lol”, “oic”, “brb”, “ok” and “omg”, failing to hold a real conversation despite my efforts, eventually leading me to conclude that they were vapid and foolish creatures. So far I’ve yet to be proven wrong.
