Why?  Because it is a cheap rip off of the most important thing we as human beings possess, and that is language.

It helped “devolve” language into a bunch of emotional symbols, short barely interpretable sentences, and imprecise thoughts.  And all this for the sake of convenience?   Why do I need more convenience?  Eating, sleeping, f~~~ing….why do I need to simplify things more.  It is what the world revolves around.

The ability to express a thought or idea is one of the most important skillsets we as human beings should strive to master.  And what has texting done?  It is quickly taking us back to the days of when the only thing a man could do to express an idea was an act of violence.  “Grunt, Uhg, I hunger.  I thirst.  This is mine.  That is mine.  Oh f~~~ speaking, Ill just use force.”

Half the time I have no clue what a person is trying to say when they text me. For example,  I’ll type “I’ll see you tomorrow” they will type “C U L8tr”?

All those miserable hours spent in elementary school learning English or cursive have all amounted to nothing.  Hell, looking back I should be grateful that I at least understood my teacher better than the masses of people I meet today.

Now that I have gotten that off my chest, please include stories about how texting ruined the culture/caused problems for you/stupefied dating/ etc.  And please no positive stories, this is a close minded discussion for close minded people.

what you really should be against is replacing face to face conversations \w texts, not the language that it’s developed.
if anything, the english language needs to evolve and fix itself, because it is absolutely horrendous.

There is a reason why liberal art students are mostly women & manginas.

I will say this though. I am horrible at making friends in the real world. I do consider myself a lone-wold in my school. But still, I prefer real communication a hell lot more than texting.

Mnemonics  are useful in computer programming- but as in programming it is elegant to use copious comments to help others understand.

But we do differentiate based on context; the spelling is separate to infer that context into written messages that may not imply the right images.

I wholeheartedly agree with @johndoe in this matter, the English, Spelling and Linguistic skills of this new generation raised on text messages is absolutely appalling.

I agree with this too but I wont limit to just texts, but expand it to include any and all social media

For example, in the field of philosophy, German is respected as an excellent language because of its precision and attention to detail.  Many can see a direct transfer of this applied in the physical world.  Germany is known for great engineering of cars, guns, etc.  The German language is intricately tied to the culture.

What does that say about the texting language?  The majority of it is defined by emoticons only.  Subjective experience is its law.

This ties in the modern culture greatly.  Turn on the radio to whatever top 40 station is playing and listen.  The majority of the songs are written in such a way that they can be interpreted to any subjective experience of the listener.  What the listener wants to here is what is played in the song.  Even if 10,000 different people are listening to the same song.

I believe what defines a primitive language, is not its simplicity or lack of words, but rather its subjective nature.  With that as a premise, I believe this new generation quite literally will either give birth to slaves or barbarians.
