FYI I’m an electronic engineer and handyman, thinking of making two cards, I’m good with photoshop and graphic design programs so I can make them myself; one for handyman/jack-of-all-trades and the other for electronic engineering. What kind of business card would make YOU want to hire me? 🙂

Since you’re a handy man, why not make a card out of stainless steel? They cost a little more, but they are very cool. Instead of printing ON them, the letters are punched into them like a hole.

This one actually looks like a toolset and even functions as a mini ruler, blade/cutter/scraper – and a bottle opener! Pretty cool.

American psycho was on my mind aswell :P… you know, I could do them in metal, I can etch metal quite easily however, I can’t afford to do that at the moment 🙁 I’d love to do a really snazzy card, if I had the money to do something that special I’d make an electronic business card- i.e. a circuit board the size of a business card with some functional electronics and an extra-flat coin cell to power it all 🙂

Any more tips chaps? What qualities do you like in a business card?

Two hands, eye contact, humble, sincerity.

Thats not to say he isn’t going to rob you blind later on, but it’s a subconscious thing and gets you remembered.

They hold on to it too for a second or so while you take it.

Contrast that to some bolshy Australians I had to work with. They flick their business cards across the meeting table like a card dealer. No eye contact, no f~~~s given, no respect earned.

The best cards I’ve come across were made of clear soft plastic with a nice mat finish. I will never forgot the man who gave me that card.

If you’re making your own cards on a printer (nothing wrong that) but to make it look really professional use doc-u-seal heat bonded plastic slips, you’ll get a stiff and durable card with crystal clear photo like quality. I have one and its indispensable, I also make stencils by sealing the computer printed pattern then cutting it with an exact-o-knife. You can easily cut them out with scissors, but I use a paper cutter.

Include an email, physical address, website, and phone # with easy to read large as possible print. Older folks won’t need glasses to read your John Hanc~~~. I like New Times Roman for a font, and I like dark or black backgrounds with light colored print. Make it manly, and you can’t loose.

I made my own cards too using the methods described above. Hands down much better than coffee stained grease smudged dirty cheap paper cards, I also save plastic bushiness cards, I don’t really know why, but I like them…

And the doc-u-seal cards look and feel like a plastic card. (both sides are laminated)

I’ll need some more dosh before I can shell out for plastic cards! I’m planning to etch the master in metal, make a little printing press. Heck I could take the etch out with me and leave my details stamped anywhere: phone books, people’s doors, their foreheads 😛 I jest. For now it’ll have to be off white paper. 😉
