So, I currently have a Dell desktop and while it is still in great condition (purchased about 3 and a half years ago), I’m trying to really go my own way and do more of what I want to do with my life, specifically emphasizing me finally working more on my writing and drawing and creating some digital comics, which I sadly can’t do so much of as I’m constantly moving around during the day and the desktop can’t come with.

Ideally, I’d also eventually get a drawing tablet of some sort and maybe some recording equipment for making music, probably also do the occasional movie-watching on it. I’m thinking of just gutting my desktop and using the hard drive (1 TB) for backing up/excess data.

Additionally, I plan on returning to school in the fall so I’ll need it for my classes. My co-worker, who is in school for some sort of network security, recommended a Lenovo. I’m kind of basic when it comes to tech; a little above your average user because I pay attention when I’m working on s~~~ but not nearly as useful as I’d like to be. I was wondering what you guys “in the know” would recommend.

Whatever you get, make sure it has a good reputation for reliability. You do not want to experience the joys of a hard drive crash, which is what happened to my hewlett packard after about nine months. BTW, hp said my warranty had expired.

ASUS 550jx

I’ve always bought $1000+ laptops, you get what you pay for…

First of all these laptops had spyware which decrypted all your ssl connections. The USA government doesn’t trust them, apparently there is a backdoor.

I put in 16 gigs of RAM and an SSD myself. Then moved the 1 TB spinning drive into the CD drive for about $1350.

If you just want something out of the box, it is a good option.

If you just want to surf the web and watch movies, just buy any laptop with a large screen for your viewing pleasure.

Don't stick your dick into anyone you aren't willing to put up with for eighteen years and nine months.

But never over $1500. Presently I’ve had an ASUS for about 3 years and it hasn’t caused me any trouble.

I don’t play many new games anyways, so the non cutting edge hardware is just fine for my purposes.

I replaced the 1TB HDD with two msata SSD’s in raid 1, and removed the DVD drive and added in a hard drive caddy, which lets me run my 1TB 7200RPM drives in raid 1. The graphics card and CPU are socketed as well on this laptop, so If I ever felt like upgrading, I could. I could even replace the two 1TB HDD’s each with dual msata SSD’s in raid one, giving me a total of 3 hardware failure resistant drives, at 1TB each!.

So if you like tinkering, a Mid range laptop you can upgrade is great! =3

I don’t think those specs are too bad at all for that price. It’s not loaded with bloatware either. It boots up quick, it’s actually my aunts, I built her a tower awhile ago and it got hit with lighting so she calls me to build her another…I just walked into walmart and bought the laptop LOL, that’s what computers are becoming today… throwaway.
