The investigators showed how one could repel liquids by changing the external microstructure of a flat surface such that a drop of liquid can still retain its shape.  The individual microstructure elements are shaped and spaced such that the liquid’s surface tension and viscosity prevent gravity from pulling apart the bulk of the drop and, thereby, making that surface wet.

 

Imagine having windows that, instead of a microscopically flat surface, will have these elements there instead.  Say good-bye to window-washing.

I really hate that story from many years ago that car companies already had the technology to make cars that would last 100 years but refused to make them as they would obviously lose money. This just re-enforces that.

I would give massive props to any company who uses this in the future for cars…if they ever do.

There are also the ideas that you can blind the window or Change the Color, UV protection etc. I hope I will get old enough to see it working everyday life.

It is always about the Profit. When I was a boy I thought in the year 2000 there will be no cars anymore, just a kind of flying objects like you see in Bladerunner or the 5th element movie. go to 1:09

But today, there is just a minority of electrical cars,

That rings a bell but I don’t remember how those surface features were produced.  The researchers could have also used methods that are common in micromachining, such as chemical milling.  But I recall some reference to the “lotus effect”.  Still, this is quite promising.
