It’s been a fun journey thus far, but also a very difficult one. It seems like the more I learn, the more I realize I’ve barely scraped the surface. Last time I posted I knew a little HTML and CSS and that was it. Since then I’ve gotten much better at using both of them, and have also added JavaScript and jQuery to my pool of knowledge. Although, I’m still very amateur at JS.

I was wondering where to go from here because the way I see it I have a few options. Let me just explain what my end-goal is because if you know where I want to be headed, any advice you can give me will be more insightful. What I would like to do is end in a position where I can have some kind of website or web application that generates a lot of users/readers/visitors that gives me a real income. The reason I want this is because I want to be nomadic. I do not want to be tied down to any location or workplace. I want to prioritize traveling and experiencing the world, so if I can run a business off of a laptop and work while I’m on the move, that would be ideal for me.

That being said, I am not opposed to anything I have to do that will efficiently get me to that end-goal. In other words, I will work a full-time normal job if it means I can get to my goal faster than if I did it a different way.

Okay, so the way I see it there are a few options I foresee, but I want to know what you think I should do in my situation. I was looking into what kind of job I could get and it appears that I am actually somewhat close to being hireable as a front-end web developer. That would mean I would put more effort into mastering the languages I have learned now, and hold off on learning PHP and MySQL for now. However, if I want to skip the job and go right into making my own projects, I would have to continue to expand and learn PHP and MySQL for sure.

Basically, I’m feeling a little in over my head and need some mentoring right now. The possible options I can take are a little overwhelming. I did all of those homework assignments I was given, but I haven’t really used the PHP or MySQL stuff yet. Also another question, what language should I invest the most heavily in? It seems like the two powerhouse languages in web development are PHP and JavaScript. So should I pick one of those depending on what I want to do and spend a lot of time on one of them?

Let me try to organize and sum up everything into a readable list:

  • My end-goal is entrepreneurial internet business that allows me to be nomadic without being tied to a job.
  • PHP and MySQL will be inevitable to learn because of this end-goal. But should I go for a front-end job and push off learning it, or learn it now and go right into starting my own projects?
  • What language should I put the most heavy focus into to make good websites, single page web apps, etc.?
  • You mentioned that you could offer training or coaching and other types of assistance. If you are too busy I understand, you have been more than generous thus far, but what do you recommend I do or where do I go from here?

Thanks in advance Keymaster or anyone else who has any advice!

I still have to learn how to make good stuff that people would even want to use in the first place. I think once I get that done I can pay more attention to things like SEO.

So much to learn is right, man. The more I learn, the more I know I don’t know – if that makes sense. It’s seriously overwhelming. I start to understand some stuff, then I look into it more and the stuff people write looks like complete gibberish. It’s crazy!

I’m just trying to think of things I can create that people will want to use. I don’t think a blog is a good idea because I’m only 22, I don’t think I can teach other people much. I think I could create something that offers convenience to other people.

It seems like the more I learn, the more I realize I’ve barely scraped the surface.

First sign of intelligence is admitting you don’t know s~~~. The more you develop, the more you will be overwhelmed with what you need to learn. I was an EXPERT at flash. But there is really no such thing. It’s a program that’s so huge and powerful even if you’re f~~~ing BRILLIANT at it, you CANNOT be a 10 in it. Anyone who says they are perfect at Flash is lying. The better you are at it, the more you realize how much you suck. I’m serious. This is normal.

Well generating recurring passive income is an “ideal” situation for ANYONE. EVERYONE wants to be able to that. Run a website that runs itself while you go to the beach and count your money when you get home? I would say that’s pretty ideal too. But it doesn’t work like that. I knew a guy who made (and lost) $80 million in the internet business by the time he was 30. At no time in his life did he ever “go to the beach and count his money when he got home”. It’s a pipe dream. He even had everyone ELSE working for him. But he was at work every single day.

Okay, so the way I see it there are a few options I foresee, but I want to know what you think I should do in my situation. I was looking into what kind of job I could get and it appears that I am actually somewhat close to being hireable as a front-end web developer.

Create some s~~~ first. The first internet company I worked for had an ad in a paper. I created my first website and send them a link with one line in an email (true story). They called me in for an interview on Friday, I started Monday. No experience or schooling. Zero. But I was up until 5AM for a year and a half to learn what I knew.

Scour ads and see what they are looking for. Learn that. But……

I would not think in terms of “languages to learn”. Set your mind on creating something and just MAKE IT. You will learn all of it along the way. I won’t tell you what to do, because that’s not right. Decide what you want to create.. and MAKE it. When you are driving your car, do you look at and focus on the yellow lines and white dashes on the road to stay in your lane? No. You look 5 car lengths ahead… and then you stay in your lane almost automatically.

Same s~~~ here. Set your mind on creating something and then just create it.
When you start creating it and focus on that, you will learn everything along the way.

So….. why don’t you create a website for yourself. Make “clint.com” about anything. Cars. Food. Graphics. S~~~ you like.

Start here http://getbootstrap.com and create a fully responsive simple bootstrap page.
Then http://getbootstrap.com/getting-started/ (read & study the whole site.)

Get a free bootstrap starter theme http://startbootstrap.com (if you want to see what a simple starter site looks like)
Analyze the s~~~ out of it. Make it into something you want.

I like this one: http://startbootstrap.com/template-overviews/agency/

But I really like this one because it comes in 6 versions for 6 different types of site. It’s $10.

Google is your friend. Your BEST friend for this. I could be here all day giving you suggestions, but your goal is too far off. Create a site first. Then create a SMART site with a CMS. Then create a MEMBER based site. Then create an online shop? You see where this could go?? In all kinds of directions. I started out as a 3D animator. I wanted to work for Lucasfilm and make tie fighters and X-wing fighters. So I DID!!!! Then I put it all in a killer flash site and got my first job – almost by accident by responding to an ad. BUT I ALREADY HAD SOMETHING CREATED TO SHOW THEM. I never became a 3D animator professionally and fell into the internet business. Then I built site for OTHER people as a job. While you do that, you can work on your own s~~~.

It can really go in many possible directions. LET IT GO THERE. You don’t know where it can go. So learn as much as you can and open as many doors for yourself as possible. Walk through every one of them. If I tell you what to do – step by step – i won’t be doing you any favors. The best guidance I can give you, is to find the dream….. and just MAKE it. You may not know what the dream is yet. And that’s cool too. Because now you can create one.

If you keep doing what you've always done... you're gonna keep getting what you always got.

I see that I’ve been looking at this from the wrong perspective. Would you consider bootstrap necessary? I’ve been getting pretty good at setting up websites the way I want using divs, but I’ll take a tour of their site and see what they have to offer.

I have some ideas for projects I can take on – I’ll keep working hard.
