I was 9 years old and remember watching it on a neighbours black and white tv.

Watching the film tonight took me back to that little boy.

I loved everything about those guys. The astronauts, mission control … every last one of those MEN.

They gave me my dreams … my hopes … my future. I was right there with them. I wanted to be them.

We’ll I didn’t make it in to space but I got close.

Those MEN were f~~~ing amazing and I thank them for my dreams.

I hope one day, men can return to that greatness …. so our young boys and men can also have dreams.

Gulp … wipes tear from eye.

This actually brings something to mind ILiveAgain. Good post by the way…

For me, I had, like most boys, always been fascinated by science. From cosmos, to microbes, computers to chemicals, SCIENCE! It just made sense. What-more is that thirst for knowledge was never-ending. It was a difficult beast to feed not in that the subjects were boring, it was just so much one wanted to learn and there simply wasn’t enough time in the day to absorb it all.

Problem for me was that I was one of 7, yes count them, 7 children. And raised by a single mother. Now, before people go blindly applauding someone for undertaking that debacle, I would be the first to say that I had an issue with it. From the very beginning I remember thinking to myself “Why do you have all these kids if you can’t take care of them?” It angered me, not because I was being selfish, but because it detracted from my ability to focus on finding and defining myself. Time that could of been spent studying, was instead spent on what feels like quite literally paying for someone else mistakes.

In high school I worked a full time job. Surrendered all proceeds to her every time I was paid. And if that didn’t happen, I found myself taking up very adult responsibilities and buying food for the home. I never understood how this women could be caked in make-up and have her nails done, but have her children at home, quite literally with nothing to eat. Or to simply go months on end with no electricity, and in the modern age! It didn’t take much scientific thinking to see this person obviously couldn’t make correct life or adult decisions.

I guess the point I’m making is that there are young men out there that absolutely thirst and starve for scientific knowledge, yet are hindered by the unchecked actions and resulting circumstances of women’s decisions. I can look back on these things today, and realize my way of thinking wasn’t wrong. Even now, at the age of 33, I find myself trying to make up for lost time by finally pursuing my studies in my field of interest. It’s a mad dash to get it all done. And for once, I can finally focus.. be rid of all the distractions, and dive recklessly into my studies like a kid with a new chem set.  Let the Nerd Rage begin…

He put that into perspective better than I could have any day of the week. Although my claims are mostly from personal experience yet lack any correlating data, his piece absolutely reflects my thoughts on the matter

@iliveagain, brother, hope I’m not hijacking or throwing a wrench in you’re thread. My experiences seem relevant to the point you’re making though. =|

felix is having an anger moment here….. I once sat in on a meeting where somebody was saying “the space program was nothing but welfare for white men….” This reply was modified 4 hours, 6 minutes ago by  felix.

I don’t believe your friends knew about the definition of welfare.

Men working on problems no one’s ever tackled before, pushing the limits of mankind’s capabilities.

Developing technology to put satellites into space.. so you can sit on your fat-ass, watch The View, and criticize a bunch of brilliant guys based on their skin color.

Nothing I’ve ever heard before has been so ignorant, so clueless, so disgusting, stupid, racist, and shameful. I daresay if I knew I’d have gotten away with it, I’d have knocked them the f~~~ out and not felt one shred of guilt, and I avoid stepping on caterpillars and spiders outside.

EDIT:   No scratch that, I’d have knocked them the f~~~ out regardless. They still have the right to say it, and I will defend to the death their right to say such idiocy, but I’m still going to knock them the f~~~ out.
