In the past 2 weeks, I’ve had to take off some time for ~~five different job interviews so far~~ doctor appointments (actually, both are very true) and to help a family member move into a house (I was going to be paid pretty well for doing so). The higher up came into the office about 20 minutes ago and asked me to explain my absence yesterday, even though I told her I’d be out yesterday on FRIDAY so she’d be aware. I didn’t go into any details (I’ve never had so many interviews in such a short span of time, to be honest), but she definitely gave a look of disapproval and was basically seeing if I’ll be in with no absence for a long time now. Why is it that I have to explain my absence down to the very detail or risk another “write-up” while NO ONE else in the office seems to? Is it because I’m the only ~~straight and/or unmarried~~ male in here?

Probably because without you there working, the females actually have to do something. Actually doing work goes against their sense of entitlement.

PS. The behavior you described of yourself is a red flag to managers that you are looking elsewhere. I wish you luck in your job search, you may want to speed it up.

The funniest thing is I have complete proof that I have been going to the doctor frequently, too. Still doesn’t seem to be good enough, as I suppose the red flags have raised already. Hopefully SOMETHING will call me this week or the next. The sooner, the better.

I remember when I was a young, single soldier. I would frequently remark how the married guys and gals would seemingly be able to take entire days to deal with “family issues” without having to put in for days off (leave). We get 30 days a year. The other single men and myself would caustically joke that we wanted a wife and kids so we can get free days off. This was not well received by our superiors. Especially the married ones.

Turns out that being a husband and father is more of a punishment than a benefit.

I noticed that when I was single, I was treated like an irresponsible child by my non-medical NCO’s and officers. Odd in light of the fact that before I was married, I was an experienced trauma medic and was professionally respected by my peers and the doctors I worked with/for. When I got married and the first kid came along, I seemed to belong to the good ole boys club. It was almost surreal.

It makes sense, I suppose. At my current position, I can barely afford to take care of myself, much less a wife or kids if I wanted to. I make $16,800 a year and $9,420 of that goes to rent and utilities alone (thank the Lord it’s all bills paid). I can only imagine how damaging it would be to my already messed up psyche and stress.

Did she ask you in front of your peers at work? That could be harassment and bullying if you could be f~~~ed to go and complain to HR about it.

Document everything by email to her from now on and cc in your office admin / 2nd in command.

If you get offered another job, DO NOT tell the c~~~s. Go ghost and report to HR a couple of days later that you’re off work due to stress from repeated bullying.

They’ll pay your wages for a while and you can get some fun tormenting the bitch in front of HR.

Play the game by their rules. You are smarter, you have the Y chromosome.

I like Progenitor’s plan. I hope it works out for you, whatever happens. Looking back on my life, everything turned out for the best — although that did not seem possible at the time.

From what I understand, even though she’s the higher up, it would take a literal act of State Congress to get me fired anyway (being a state worker). They’d have to go through a lot of loops and tricks. I may consider going to HR instead of her for things like this after all. Might help. I feel so inept when it comes to these things. The way I was always taught was “go to your superior for any issues, not HR.”
