I’ve been aimless ever since I graduated high school. I have a few college courses under my belt, but I haven’t really done anything yet with myself. I’m not in school and I don’t have a degree. I work, go home, sleep, wake up, do it again, and spend the weekend watching Netflix and movies because I work nights, so no one is up when I am. I don’t know what I want to do with my future…I’ve talked about writing and drawing comics before, but I’ve never had the discipline to really work on that and I feel like all my ideas are unoriginal and s~~~ anyways.

Any advice for how to figure out what I should do for a living? All I know is that I don’t want to be poor, haha.

No really there are two ways of doing this. Find something you like and try and work in it, even if it’s not the same thing but pretty close that’s still good.

Secondly, find something that your community/country really, really needs and is willing to hire for, even train you from nothing for and get into that. Then sit back, get money and see if you want to continue.

Then 9/11.  Army stated they were cutting off my college money and were more than likely going to call me back in.  So, I became a contractor.  Just making money trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.

After all these years I have finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up.  I am fortunate enough to more than likely get there sooner that most, but just so you know, here it is.

I want to retire when I grow up.  Couldn’t do that with a wife and kids that would become ex-wife and some children related to me I don’t know.  I will be the dirty old man when I grow up, and I will be well under 50 when that happens.  The thought just makes me smile.

Rendering the fullest possible quantity and the best possible quality of service.”  It may seem a little hokey but the languaging is semantically significant and goes right into the brain. At the time, I knew what characteristics of the job I wanted such as hours and location and how I wanted to have interesting work that I would enjoy but had no big idea of how to define it.  When I wrote this down and focused on this thought along with the characteristics the I knew I wanted then a whole bunch of things changed in my life without a lot of effor.  I cleared all the stuff about sales out of my resume.  Interviews starting happening and I found that I needed more information.  I got that and in about 4 months after starting the process, I got a job in IT that paid way more than I was asking.  I am still in the same place today and still using that thought when things seem difficult.

You are leaning toward a “Artistic” type of work you would like to do. I would say to check out welding, always a need, it pays very well, and it has artistic qualities you can take pride in. I know it is not comics, but the art some welders produce is amazing. Just a thought.

I am retired Air Force, and while you can go in a learn a trade and get experience, I am not sure I would recommend military service right now. Kids in the school I teach at earn about $38K a year, right out of the gate, high schoolers! For welding!

The whole “What do you want to be when you grow up” seems to be just an abstract thought process brought to us by society in order to control us.  I remember when I was in school I thought I wanted to be a teacher.  I scored real high on every aptitude test they through at me, and I guess the establishment just decided to put in my records I would be a great teacher due to me saying I wanted to be a teacher.  I’m willing to bet if I put down I wanted to be a janitor my records would have stated I would make a great janitor.

The point being jobs are like hobbies.  Once you master one you always want to move on and do something else.  So our best bet as men is to make as much money as possible, save it up, and have a good financial base so we can do whatever the hell we want before we die.
