I’m interested in getting an internship at a specific company that does anime localization. My goal is to gain experience working inside that industry and see how voice actors do their job. I’ve never applied for an internship before so what are some tips and advice you guys could give me?

Meaning… if you’re a talker, learn to keep it zipped around professionals. I emphasis this because I worked in a field that that had “apprentices” (interns). And some of them shot their mouths off as if they ran the place. It wasn’t even what they said or how they said it… they were just not “on the inside” yet. So while you can still be very active, participate and belong just as much, it’s a respected state to remain as much of an observer as much as possible.

And over about 8 years… I noticed the loudest apprentices didn’t get contracts.
But the ones who shut the f~~~ up did.

This may not apply or be as rigid in your field. But there is real value in “knowing your place”.

Explain this to a woman, and she will think you’re being sexist and cruel.

Keep a respectful quietness but that doesn’t mean switch off. Observe everything.

Dress to where you are headed not where you have been. Invest a few quid in the right gear – good pair of shoes, matching belt, decent shirts and trousers. Fake it until you make it.

CVs and cover letters often get intercepted by HR and past over. Open evenings, events, seminars etc are the places to network.

Also, try just turning up at the companies you have identified and see who you could speak to (“I was just passing by on my way to *competitor* and thought I would call in on the off chance”). Pick your day and never a busy Monday morning.

Mornings generally bosses are busy and dealing with fires. Tuesday / Wednesday afternoons for example may be a better time. Have some b~~~~, dress smart and speak confidently but politely to the admin girls at the front desk (they will be around your age so use your charm). These are the girls who can get you a chance to speak to the bosses or their PA’s.

You might get a couple of bites and see who you need to see rather than end up in an inbox of some useless HR c~~~. Excuse my language but you’ll see what I mean in a few years.

It’s hard to explain how much of an impact making that initial mental adjustment can have.
